It somehow still feels too early in Taylor Swift‘s career to make any true considerations about who could plausibly play her in a future biopic. But if that project were to eventually manifest, Amy Adams will be first in line — not for the lead role, but to play the pop star’s publicist Tree Paine.

“That would be amazing,” Adams said during a recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “That would be so fun. If it got me closer to Taylor, then that would be fun.”

The host traced the casting idea back to social media campaigns that have positioned the actress as a no-brainer for the role. He shared one tweet in particular from writer Hunter Harris, posted in 2019, which read: “Amy Adams will win an Oscar for Tree Paine’s biopic.” The notion of the biopic being specifically for Paine herself, rather than Swift, is even better.

As a recently converted Swiftie, Adams has a ton of lore to catch up on in the Swift-Paine universe. “I’ve always liked her music and appreciated her,” she told Fallon. “And then I went to the Eras Tour — a friend of mine had a ticket — and then I became, like, a Swiftie at 50 … I suddenly went from normal to, like, I’ll have all the friendship bracelets. I was like, who am I?”

But Adams isn’t without competition. Film fans and Swifties alike have also considered Jessica Chastain for the role. People used to build experience through apprenticeships and fellowships to become casting directors. Now they just need access to X (formerly Twitter) and a Letterboxd account.

Adams has the added edge of an invisible string through. Years ago, she recalled, she ended up at an after-party where she sang “What’s Going On?” with Swift during karaoke. “I may have sang it a little loud,” Adams said. “And I’m sure everybody was like, ‘Amy, shut up. We want to hear Taylor sing’ … So I should have sat down and just let Taylor sing.”
