Michelle Obama Says Barack Is ‘Really Hard to Shop for’ on ‘Jennifer Hudson Show’
Michelle Obama appeared on The Jennifer Hudson Show this week to chat about holiday traditions, her grown-up daughters, and her new book, Overcoming: A Workbook, a companion The Light We Carry.
Obama shared what’s been going on with her husband, former president Barack Obama, and their kids, Sasha and Malia. “He’s still working too hard,” she told host Jennifer Hudson of her spouse, who is currently focused on the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. “But I think that’s something he will always do.”
Of their children, Obama noted that they are now “women, living on their own.” “They live together,” she said. “I’ve loved every phase of raising my daughters.”
Later in the interview, the former First Lady said the holidays are her favorite time of the year, adding that her family’s traditions have “not really” changed since leaving the White House. The Obama clan celebrates Thanksgiving with her family “on the mainland” and heads to Hawaii for Christmas. “We’re going to head to the island for a little sun and to try to unwind,” Obama told Hudson, adding, “That’s why you gotta pick your husband right. He got a lot cuter when I found out he was from Hawaii.”
Obama confirmed that is actually her husband who is the most difficult to shop for. “He’s just a boy,” she said. “He just doesn’t do much. He golfs and there’s only so many golf balls you can get a dude. He’s already got the clubs. I can’t get him another golf shirt. He’s really hard and he doesn’t want anything. He’s one of these sort of ‘Just a nice letter.’ And he means it. So he’s really hard to shop for.” She added that she wants to get him nice clothes because “he’s also cheap.”
Elsewhere in the interview, Obama reflected on her mom and thanked Hudson for her performance of “Amazing Grace” at her funeral. She also promoted her recent Netflix series, The Later Daters, produced by the Obamas’ Higher Ground Productions.
Obama notably did not discuss politics or the recent presidential election, in which she endorsed and supported Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. Following Donald Trump’s victory, the Obamas released a joint statement saying, “In a country as big and diverse as ours, we won’t always see eye-to-eye on everything. But progress requires us to extend good faith and grace — even to people with whom we deeply disagree. That’s how we’ve come this far, and it’s how we’ll keep building a country that is more fair and more just, more equal and more free.”
