Josh Welch, longtime president of Film Independent, died Dec. 31 after a five-year battle with colon cancer. His age was not immediately available.

Welch started out as an actor and started volunteering at the Film Independent Spirit Awards annually starting in 1996. He joined the Film Independent staff over 20 years ago, becoming president in 2012. He oversaw all programs and operations for the nonprofit, growing the organization’s staff, budget, programming slate and membership.

“We are devastated by the loss of Josh Welsh,” said Film Independent Board Chair Brenda Robinson. “Josh was a tireless champion of independent voices, a trusted arts leader and a cherished colleague and friend. The work we do at Film Independent has never been more necessary and we will honor his legacy by continuing to build on the foundation he established. Our hearts go out to his family.”

Under his leadership, Film Independent was able to deepen partnerships with studios, NGOs and governments, and extended its international reach by partnering with the State Department on the Global Media Makers Program. A tireless advocate for filmmakers, Welch expanded the organizations commitment to promoting diversity in the film industry.

Before he served as president, Welch was responsible for planning and implementing Film Independent’s Artist Development programs for over a decade.

He earned a Ph.D in philosophy from Johns Hopkins U. and a B.A. in philosophy from Kenyon College. He also served as lead singer in the alt-country band Meatyard, which will release an album later this year.

Several filmmakers commented on the Instagram post announcing his death. Barry Jenkins said, “A tremendous human being. Just the absolute best of us.”

James Ponsoldt wrote, “You were the most wonderful human, Josh. You advocated endlessly for so many people. You were the definition of selfless. Your kindness was limitless. You will be an inspiration for the rest of my life. I already miss you. Thank you, my friend.”

“Such a beautiful, kind, lovely man. Every interaction with Josh was such a warm and happy one. My condolences to his friends, family and colleagues,” wrote Jeremy Podeswa.

He is survived by his wife Bonnie Gavel and daughter Isla Welsh.
