‘Kimmel’ Cancels, Critics Choice Awards Postponed Due to Los Angeles Fires

The devastating fires in Los Angeles have forced several television shows and entertainment industry events to shut down.

Jimmy Kimmel Live has canceled its taping for Wednesday night, Jan. 8, while CBS’ After Midnight, hosted by Taylor Tomlinson, is off for the rest of the week, per Variety. As it stands, Kimmel is still scheduled to return on Thursday, but that could change with the fires showing few signs of abating. 

The Critics Choice Awards, which were supposed to take place this Sunday, Jan. 12, were postponed and rescheduled for Jan. 26 (via Deadline). And the event will reportedly still take place at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica (part of that neighborhood is right on the edge of the current evacuation zone for the Palisades fire).

“This unfolding tragedy has already had a profound impact on our community. All our thoughts and prayers are with those battling the devastating fires and with all who have been affected,” said Critics Choice Association CEO Joey Berlin.

Additionally, the fire prompted two films to cancel their L.A. premieres last night, the sports drama Unstoppable and the horror flick Wolf Man. Premieres scheduled for tonight, including the Robbie Williams biopic Better Man and the new Max TV show The Pitt, have been canceled, as has a scheduled Thursday premiere for the Pamela Anderson-starring The Last Showgirl. The SAG Award nominations were revealed over email Wednesday, Jan. 8, instead of at an in-person event. 

As of publication, the fires have displaced more than 100,000 people, destroyed thousands of homes, businesses, and other structures, and killed at least two. The Palisades fire has burned through nearly 12,000 acres west of Los Angeles, while the Eaton fire has burned over 10,000 acres east of the city. The blazes have been fueled by raging windstorms, with gusts reaching speeds of 100 miles per hour, as well as swaths of dry vegetation.
