Indonesian Animation ‘Jumbo’ Breaks Records, Heads for Global Release
Indonesian animated feature “Jumbo” has shattered local box office records, becoming the highest-grossing Indonesian animated film of all time after reaching 1 million admissions in just seven days following its theatrical premiere.
The Visinema Studios production, which opened on March 31, surpassed the previous record held by “Si Juki The Movie: Panitia Hari Akhir” (2017), which drew 642,312 admissions and remained unbeaten for eight years.
The film follows Don, a young boy often underestimated by his peers who sets out to perform in a talent show with a stage play inspired by a treasured fairytale book left behind by his late parents. His plans are disrupted when a bully steals the book, and Don unexpectedly meets a mysterious young child seeking help to reunite with her parents.
“These numbers aren’t just about ticket sales. They represent love, hope, and trust from the people for our own local stories,” said Anggia Kharisma, producer of “Jumbo.” “Seeing this kind of heartfelt response from Indonesian audiences makes every challenge we’ve faced over the past five years feel incredibly meaningful.”
The film’s success is particularly noteworthy in a market where horror films dominate over 50% of domestic theatrical releases. “Jumbo” has managed to thrive with its family-friendly storytelling focused on themes of warmth, hope and connection.
“Jumbo” has also generated substantial organic support on social media, with self-dubbed “Jumbo’s Free Buzzers” creating viral memes and messages that kept the film trending on X and TikTok for days.
Following its domestic success, the film is expanding internationally beginning June with theatrical releases in Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei Darussalam. The animated feature, directed and written by Ryan Adriandhy, will also screen across parts of Asia and Europe, including Russia, Ukraine, the Baltic states, and several Central Asian countries.
The film represents a significant achievement for Indonesia‘s animation industry, having been created through a five-year collaborative effort involving more than 420 Indonesian animators and creators.
Visinema Group, founded in 2008 by Indonesian filmmaker Angga Dwimas Sasongko, continues to build on its portfolio of successful intellectual properties that includes “Nussa,” “Mencuri Raden Saleh,” and “Keluarga Cemara.”
