Broadway Box Office: Idina Menzel in ‘Redwood’ Sees Strong Start

The new musical Redwood, starring Idina Menzel, had a strong start last week, bringing in close to $400,000 across its first two preview performances.
The musical, which marks Menzel’s first return to Broadway since starring in the 2014-2015 musical If/Then, played to 100 percent capacity with an average ticket price of $172.21. The show, in which Menzel plays a grieving mother who finds solace in the woods of Northern California, is scheduled to open at the Nederlander Theatre Feb. 13.
A Wonderful World: The Louis Armstrong Musical announced late Saturday that it will play its final performance Feb. 23, after opening on Broadway Nov. 11. The news came as the musical saw the lowest gross of its run last week, at $479,348, and the show played to a capacity of 65 percent at Studio 54.
Wicked again topped the industry grosses for the week, bringing in $2.4 million, followed by Gypsy, starring Audra McDonald, which brought in $1.8 million, The Lion King with $1.7 million, Hamilton with $1.6 million and Sunset Blvd. with $1.4 million.
The Outsiders missed one performance last week due to a power outage at the Jacobs Theatre. The musical still played to more than 100 percent capacity and brought in $1.1 million across seven performances, but made about $416,000 less than the prior week.
Betty Gilpin played her first week as the lead of Oh, Mary!, taking over the role from Cole Escola. The play still brought in a strong $926,000 and played to 98 percent capacity, but fell about $327,000 from the prior week.
